Is Kilkenny's glass this year half full or half empty?

Isn’t hurling a funny old game? Two weeks ago at Nowlan Park, Kilkenny put up a decent first half performance against Cork, and for their efforts they took an eight point lead into the second 35 minutes of action.

Kilkenny relinquish hold on Walsh Cup in Tullamore

A fine crowd turned out on Sunday last to witness Kilkenny lead by six points to two after 20 minutes in their bid to retain the Walsh Cup. However, in the run up to the break a scoring tally and a Ger Healion goal saw the half time score read Kilkenny 0-10, Offaly 1-6.

Cats run out deserving winners in intermediate final

Kilkenny intermediates ran out deserving winners in their Leinster final against Dublin at Nowlan Park on Saturday. Michael Grace who came on as a sub scored 6 super points from play to help his side to victory. It was tit for tat throughout with the game resulting in extra time. However, Kilkenny’s strength and stamina proved to be the real difference as the clock ticked down in added time. Well-taken points from Michael Grace, Patrick Hogan and Niall Walsh all added to the difference. The Dubs kept the pressure on until the final whistle but the Cats held on to record a deserved victory. They will now face Galway in the semi-final in Tullamore this Saturday.

Emeralds are on form in the intermediate grade

Emeralds are the form team in the intermediate grade as they were always in control against a Conahy Shamrocks’ outfit that suffered their first defeat in nearly 15 months.

Christmas will come early for under 21s

The Kilkenny club season may be drawing to a close for this year but before the curtain finally comes down, there is one more very important fixture to be played, the U21 final is down for decision between Dicksboro and the Rower Inistioge this Sunday at Nowlan Park. This grade is often referred to as the forgotten grade due mainly to the timing of the competition. The fixture’s committee find it almost impossible to fit this competition into the roster because demand on these players is at a premium during the height of the summer. This year’s competition seemed very open with a lot of teams fancying their chances. Teams like St Martin’s, Clara, Danesfort, O'Loughlin and Erin’s Own have all fallen by the wayside over the last month or so. This year’s competition also looked very lopsided with 10 teams competing in the north of the county compared to just three in the south, other snippets of note are that the Rower Inistioge have just played one game namely the southern final to get to this stage of the competition whereas Dicksboro have come through a tough campaign beating Clara, O'Loughlins and Conahy Shamrocks along the way. This is no fault of the southern champions but maybe the system needs to be addressed. I feel one or two southern outfits dropped back to the B championship in search of honours. My thinking on this situation is that a team will always gain more long-term by competing at the highest level. I've seen a few cases at various grades where teams would be capable of competing at a higher level.

Dicksboro ends year on a bright note winning U-21 title

Dicksboro ended the year on a good note last Sunday in Nowlan Park when they were far too strong for a gutsy Rower Inistioge side in the Michael Lyng U-21 ‘A’ hurling final. A small crowd turned up to witness the city side recording their 4th U-21 title, the first since '92.
